The Colliers – Ann Arbor office is led by the veteran broker, Jim Chaconas. Jim is one of Washtenaw County area’s most accomplished commercial real estate professionals. A lifelong Ann Arbor resident with roots in retail distribution, Jim has built an unparalleled network throughout the region and remains deeply committed to its economic growth, business community, and ongoing development.
With more than 30 years of commercial real estate experience, Jim has established himself as a market leader in Washtenaw County. His expertise spans leasing, acquisitions, dispositions, development, site selection, business placement, and investment transactions. Together with his team, Jim has been involved in nearly 70% of all commercial real estate transactions across Washtenaw County, a testament to his market knowledge, relationships, and trusted reputation.
Since joining Colliers, Jim has successfully combined his extensive local expertise with the firm's global platform, delivering exceptional results for clients ranging from local entrepreneurs to major institutional investors. His success is grounded in deep market insight, strategic thinking, and a disciplined, client-focused approach.
Over the course of his career, Jim has played a key role in several landmark projects throughout the Ann Arbor area, including the redevelopment of Westgate Shopping Center, The Courtyard Shops retail center, the former Borders Group world headquarters, and the restoration of the historic Handicraft Building at Liberty and Division Streets. In 2018 and 2019, he facilitated one of the region's most significant transactions, representing the sale of the Fingerle Lumber property to the University of Michigan.
In recognition of his outstanding performance, Jim was named Top Broker for Colliers' Southeast Michigan region in 2019 and was also honored for completing the region's Top Retail Sale through the Fingerle Lumber transaction.
A respected industry leader, Jim is actively involved with the Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) Institute, one of the commercial real estate industry's most prestigious professional organizations. His expertise in commercial investment real estate has made him a trusted advisor to clients, developers, and public-sector stakeholders alike.
Beyond his brokerage work, Jim continues to support the City of Ann Arbor on land use and development initiatives and has provided consulting services to Ann Arbor Fair Housing on site selection and land acquisition projects. His ongoing civic engagement reflects his commitment to helping shape the future of the community he proudly calls home.
